What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device (computer, smartphone or tablet) when you visit. They serve to remember your settings, to analyse how the site is used, or to improve your experience. Besides cookies, a website may use other browser storage techniques — such as local storage (localStorage) — which serve a similar purpose but are technically not cookies. Cookies cannot access other data on your device and, on their own, contain no information that directly identifies you as a person.

The current state

The editorial content of this website is not yet finalised. For reach measurement, however, Google Analytics 4 is already integrated — on every page. No advertising network is integrated, so there is nothing to display for advertising purposes. Google Analytics 4 runs under Google Consent Mode v2, deny-first for every visitor regardless of country, and this website uses no consent solution (CMP) of its own that could change that default — set out under Cookies on this website below.

In short: Google Analytics 4 is integrated, but sets no cookie and stores no identifier on your device — storage stays denied by default for every visitor, with no region-based exception. No advertising network is integrated.

Technically necessary storage

So that the site can respect a choice you make, a small amount of information may be stored in your browser’s local storage. It is technically necessary, serves only to make the site work, and is stored regardless of any consent. This is local storage (localStorage), and so technically not a cookie:

• Your language-suggestion choice — when the site notices your browser prefers another available language and you dismiss that suggestion, this remembers your choice so the suggestion does not reappear on every page.

This entry remains until you clear your browser’s storage. It contains no name, no email address and no identifier that could be used to build a user profile.

Cookies on this website

Google Analytics 4 is integrated for reach measurement. No advertising network is integrated. Google Analytics 4 is governed by Google Consent Mode v2, deny-first, with no region-based exception:

• Every visitor, everywhere — storage for Google Analytics 4 starts denied by default. This website uses no consent solution (CMP) of its own that could change that default, so storage stays denied. No cookie is set and no identifier is stored on or read from your device. Google Analytics 4 runs cookieless: aggregated measurement pings only, no personalised advertising. This is the same default whether you are visiting from Switzerland, elsewhere in Europe, or anywhere else.

Because Google Analytics 4 sets no cookie this way, there is currently no concrete cookie to name here — a cookie list would otherwise describe cookies that are not being set at all. Should this website introduce a consent solution in future through which you could consent to storage, this section would be expanded with the name, provider, purpose and storage duration of each cookie then set.

Excluding our own visits

One exception, named here rather than passed over in silence: on every page view the measurement code checks whether the gr_int flag is present in your browser. That is our own exclusion for internal visits, so that our test traffic does not end up in the figures. It is written only when a page is opened with ?internal=1 appended — as a cookie with a lifetime of one year, and additionally in local storage. On an ordinary visit nothing is written, and nothing on this site links to it. It holds a single flag and nothing about you. You delete it by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

Third-party cookies

Google Analytics 4 is provided by Google LLC (USA) as a third party. Google LLC is subject to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, through which the European Commission has found an adequate level of data protection for certified companies. No advertising network (such as Google AdSense) is integrated.

Google Analytics 4 sets no cookie. But loading the measurement tag from Google’s servers necessarily transmits data to Google LLC as a technical consequence of that request — including your IP address at the moment of connection, the page URL, the referring page, and device/browser type. Google Analytics 4 truncates IP addresses for measurement purposes, so they are not stored in full; at the point of connection itself, however, the address unavoidably reaches Google. How Google uses data and how you set or switch off personalised advertising can be found at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and adssettings.google.com.

How to manage your consent and cookies

Once analytics and advertising are active, the same option is available to every visitor regardless of where you are: reopen Google’s consent message at any time and withdraw or change consent — just as easily as it was given — with the button below. Where Google shows no message to reopen, you can still switch off personalised advertising in Google’s ad settings:

Independently of all this, you can delete cookies at any time through your browser settings, or block them from being set in the first place:

Deleting cookies does not impair your use of this website.

Relationship to data protection

This cookie policy supplements our privacy policy, which describes what data we process, how, and what rights you have. Google Analytics 4 is integrated and, when it loads, transmits data — including your IP address — to Google LLC (USA); no cookie is set in doing so. For its own purposes, this website otherwise collects no personal data. No advertising network is integrated.
